Gastric Bypass Surgery Cost differs within USA and
differs abroad.
.......Ontario spent over $21 million last year to
send 439 patients to the USA for Gastric Bypass Surgery. That's an average cost of about $47,800. And that is up from 2004, when it cost an average of about $35,000 to send each patient to the States....
.......Weight loss support groups say the prices for surgery in the
USA are rising, with most patients paying between $50,000 and $80,000 for the procedure and sometimes even over $100,000......
.....Dr. Roslin, who wrote a book called "Understanding Obesity Surgery" said the gastric bypass takes 80 to 120 minutes and costs about $25,000 to $30,000.......
......the death rate for stomach band surgery, which can cost $17,000 to $20,000, is about 1 in 1,000. There were only minor complications in the study. Stomach stapling has a 0.2 percent death rate and costs $20,000 to $30,000. In the United States, surgeons perform now more than 200,000 obesity surgeries each year......
.......a minor procedure, such as gastric banding, without complications can be expected to cost around $20,000. This figure will increase to perhaps as much as $35,000 for full gastric bypass surgery. Should complications arise it is extremely difficult to say just what the additional cost would be but it would not be unreasonable to think in terms of a figure of $50,000......
.......unlikely to come away with a bill of less than $20,000 and could well be looking at closer to $30,000 or $35,000......
........as a very general guide, the cost of malabsorption or mixed surgery will start at around $25,000. These however are simply a guide to the starting price of surgery and do not take into account any additional costs that may arise as a result of complications during surgery.......
........when there are no complications, the most common form of weight loss surgery, the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, can cost from $25,000 to $35,000, or more......
........affordable gastric bypass surgery in Brazil with all surgical costs included is
less than $12,000........
Gastric Bypass Surgery Cost -
What is Included?
Gastric bypass surgery is a full surgical procedure
requiring the services of a surgical team including a
qualified bariatric surgeon, surgical assistants, an
anesthetist and a multi-disciplinary team with a
psychologist, nutritionist and other specialists, as well as
hospitalization for at least 2 to 3 days followed by a 2
to 4 week recovery period. These are the standard costs,
normally included in the cost estimate.
Like many other forms of surgery, gastric bypass surgery is not without its risks and, while many patients will sail through the procedure, a significant number will develop complications either in hospital or during the recovery period which can push up the overall cost of the procedure considerably. Against this background it can be seen that the cost is going to vary widely
often unexpected.
Gastric Bypass Surgery Risks and
Complications
You also need to consider the risk of complications
arising, which may require additional surgery and
hospitalization or outpatient treatment. All gastric
bypass surgery patients will suffer some complications
which will vary from minor problems which are easily
treated to serious complications which result in further
surgery and hospitalization for perhaps several days.
Once again, complications can add very considerably to
the cost of gastric bypass surgery and can even end up
doubling the cost.
What are some of the complication risks?
1. If you are excessively overweight this puts extra stress on the
chest cavity and lungs and produces an additional risk
of contracting pneumonia after gastric bypass surgery.
2. Another complication, specifically related to gastric
bypass surgery, is a possible leak along one of
the staple lines in the stomach. A leak along the staple
line in the stomach can lead to infection which is
generally cured with antibiotics. Most cases heal in
time but, occasionally, this leakage can be serious
enough to need emergency surgery.
3. The risk of blood clots occurring in the legs is most prevalent in the
case of very overweight patients and, when blood clots
do form, the situation can be serious. Sometimes blood
clots will migrate to the lungs and lodge themselves in
the arteries of the lungs producing a pulmonary embolism
- a serious and life-threatening condition that damages
the tissue of the lung.

RISK OF SURGERY
Any major surgery involves the potential for
complications - adverse events which increase risk, hospital stay, and
mortality. Some complications are common to all abdominal operations,
while some are specific to bariatric surgery. A person who chooses to
undergo gastric bypass surgery should know about these risks.
